For Immediate Release
Lake Country, BC – Anyone thinking of running as a Candidate in the June 24, 2017 By-election will want to read through all of the information provided in the By-election section of the www.lakecountry.bc.ca website. Only two seats for Council are included in this By-election: Oyama Ward Councillor and Carr’s Landing Ward Councillor. Candidate Nomination Packages are available for download and for hard copy pick up at Lake Country Municipal Hall (10150 Bottom Wood Lake Road).
Nomination documents must be filed between 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 9, 2017 and 4 p.m. Friday, May 19, 2017, excluding statutory holidays and weekends. Nominations will not be accepted after the deadline.
You may run as a Candidate in the 2017 by-election if:
- you are a Canadian citizen;
- you are at least 18 years old on June 24, 2017;
- have lived in BC for at least 6 months;
- are not disqualified from holding office, or otherwise disqualified by law.
Candidates do not have to live in the jurisdiction in which they are running for office. However, in order to be nominated as a Candidate, they require two (2) nominators who must be qualified electors of the jurisdiction they are running in. (For example, an individual running in Oyama must have two nominators that are qualified electors of Oyama.)
If elected to office, the successful candidate will be expected to serve a 16-month term which officially begins by being sworn in at the public Council Meeting on July 4, 2017.
The general voting day will be held Saturday, June 24, 2017 in both Oyama and Carr’s Landing; advance polls will also be held June 14 and 20, 2017 in both wards. Only qualified electors in Oyama will be voting for the Oyama Ward Councillor; and qualified electors in Carr’s Landing will be voting for the Carr’s Landing Ward Councillor. Electors from other parts of Lake Country will not be invited to vote in this By-election. Mail ballot voting will be available for qualified electors in the relevant wards.
