buy_tickets_onlineBorn Valdemar Horsdal in Ottawa, Canada has been part of the fabric of Canadian pop and folk music for almost 40 years. A man with a thousand friends, from Newfoundland to Vancouver Island to Texas to New Zealand, he’s a singer, guitarist and songwriter who catches the small but telling moments that make up life.

Remembered for Play Me a Rock and Roll Song, his bitter-sweet memory of finding himself, a relaxed and amiable story-teller, facing a rambunctious audience at the Aldergrove Rock Festival circa 1968, Valdy has sold almost half a million copies of his 13 albums, has two Juno Awards (Folk Singer of the Year and Folk Entertainer of the Year), a total of seven Juno nominations and four Gold albums to his credit.

Valdy’s recent CDs include “Contenders”, a collaboration with friend and fellow singer/songwriter, Gary Fjellgaard, with whom he has an absolute blast touring, and a solo release, “Viva Valdy: Live at Last”, a two-CD package, one live, one studio, with a total of 25 tunes, and a lyric booklet

One of Canada’s most influential songwriters, Valdy’s composition A Good Song was recorded under the title Just a Man by the venerable Quincy Jones ( he sang lead on the recording!). Play Me a Rock and Roll Song has been recorded by a few artists, including John Kay of Steppenwolf.

Along the way, Valdy has taken his music to a dozen different countries, from Denmark to Australia and been an often-invited performer at the prestigious Kerrville Festival in Texas. His past television appearances include Canada AM and Open Mike with Mike Bullard. Valdy has also been a panelist on Front Page Challenge, and played a lead role in an episode of The Beachcombers original series.

Jeff Piattelli, is a self-taught singer-songwriter based out of Kelowna BC. He developed a love and passion for music at a very young age, starting with learning to play the piano, and a few years later with singing and playing guitar. In his early teens he began writing songs in various genres. Jeff put together a band and after several months of practice they entered and won their first ever Battle of the Bands contest. They got to perform at Kelowna’s hottest summer festival at the time, Wakefest. Following that he was addicted to the feeling of being on stage and performing for a crowd.

After Spending some time playing hard rock he decided to switch gears and start as a solo performer playing mostly acoustic guitar. Jeff quickly realized this was where he excelled most, and began writing music almost everyday. Later that year he won a Valley wide songwriting competition and soon had his original song playing on several local radio stations. This inspired him to record more original music, Jeff recorded a solo acoustic album, which had 30,000 plays online and followed it with a full band album a few years later. Both of which saw several different songs such as “Superman”, “Beautiful Things” and “Listen” get regular radio play throughout the valley.

Jeff has pursued music through many platforms; from Summer Festivals, to huge events at Big White, playing the Best Buy Grand Opening, opening for Andrew Allen, songwriting and talent competitions, and even had his music featured on K96.3’s compilation CD of upcoming talent two years in a row.

He has spent the last several months writing all new original music. He is just beginning to perform the songs live, and even added a Ukulele to his act alongside his Guitar and Piano. Using a loop pedal while performing, it is always entertaining watching Jeff layer melodies over himself and fill out a room, even though he is a solo performer. Jeff will be performing a wide variety of music on May 28th, some old for long time fans and some new for those just discovering his songwriting talents. If you are a music lover, you won’t be disappointed!

Show:  AWAKE: The Life of Yogananda
Date & Time: Sunday, June 19, 2016 | 4:00pm
Cost: $10
Buy Tickets:  Call 250-766-9309

End your Sol-ful day at Creekside Theatre for the 4pm showing of AWAKE: The Life of Yogananda.

AWAKE_Banner_Facebook_EventsAWAKE: The Life of Yogananda is an unconventional biography about the Hindu Swami who brought yoga and meditation to the West in the 1920s. Paramahansa Yogananda authored the spiritual classic “Autobiography of a Yogi,” which has sold millions of copies worldwide and is a go-to book for seekers, philosophers and yoga enthusiasts today. (Apparently, it was the only book that Steve Jobs had on his iPad.) By personalizing his own quest for enlightenment and sharing his struggles along the path, Yogananda made ancient Vedic teachings accessible to a modern audience, attracting many followers and inspiring the millions who practice yoga today.

Filmed over three years with the participation of 30 countries around the world, the documentary examines the world of yoga, modern and ancient, east and west and explores why millions today have turned their attention inwards, bucking the limitations of the material world in pursuit of self-realization.

Archival material from the life of Yogananda (who died in 1952) creates a spine for the narrative, but the film stretches the dimensions of a standard biography. The footage includes stylized interviews, metaphoric imagery and recreations, taking us from holy pilgrimages in India to Harvard’s Divinity School and its cutting-edge physics labs, from the Center for Science and Spirituality at the University of Pennsylvania to the Chopra Center in Carlsbad, California. By evoking the journey of the soul as it pushes its way through the oppression of the human ego and delusion of the material world, the film creates an experiential immersion into the unseen realms. AWAKE is ultimately the story of humanity itself: the universal struggle of all beings to free themselves from suffering and to seek lasting happiness.

Les Noces Gitanes – Flamenco/Balkan/Moroccan music and dance

For over 10 years “Les Noces Gitanes” has embarked their audiences on a colourful, musical voyage. From the Balkans to Andalucia on through the Maghreb, the group offers a richly unique show, merging the styles of the Mediterranean peoples in a joyful hybrid.

Brothers and founders of Les Noces Gitanes, Alejandro and Aurelien, found inspiration for their group while travelling in the Tzigane villages of Romania with musicians of Ciocarlia and Taraf de Haidouks and in Jerez de la Frontera, the Mecca of flamenco. Upon returning to their university town of Angers, France, their unique style quickly attracted artists from varying cultures and together they created an inimitable sound and visual.

Today Les Noces Gitanes boasts seven artists whose ethnicities span the globe, including a hypnotic flamenco dancer with Indian roots. Their latest album, “La Luna y El Sol”, (September 2015) blends contemporary sounds with flamenco and Arab song, Balkan fanfare and percussive footwork.

It is the result of a wealth of talent emanating from a myriad of cultural influences.

With an international following, Les Noces Gitanes has performed in France, Morocco, Russia, Switzerland, Canada and Ecuador. They return to BC this July as part of their summer tour.
